Derby Festé will arrive on 29 and 30 September, transforming Derby into a playground with performances for the whole family to enjoy.

It kicks off on Friday night as Bass’ Recreation ground is transformed into a ‘World of Circus’ with a twist of Festé and a sprinkling of magic.

Enjoy the very first ‘Festé Food Village’ with street-food and drinks from around the world. Take in the beauty of the fire garden and encounter a carnival procession and circus acts along the way. 

The evening will build towards a show-stopping, daring and dangerous aerial performance by European company Gorilla Circus called ‘The Altitude Show’. A closer look at what’s on Friday evening:

HEADLINE – GORILLA CIRCUS – “ALTITUDE”

Height, fear, freedom and adrenaline. This show-stopping, daring and dangerous aerial performance all takes place on a unique giant kinetic structure. The show blends the traditional with the unexpected. Flying trapeze, high wire and a host of other high altitude acts meet hydraulic arms and a structure that is as much a character and part of the show as the performers are!

CIRCUS GEEKS – “PROJECT_VEE”

The show combines elements of classic street performance with unusual traditional circus inspired by a legendary Soviet circus act. Roulette wheel meets juggling: danger, skill and awe-inspiring moments. Aluminium, concrete and motors mix in an unlikely way; Project_Vee takes juggling to a different dimension. Literally

Time: 6pm-6.30pm & 7pm-7.30pm

CARNIVAL PROCESSION

Follow our colourful Carnival Procession as it leads you through the wonders of Festé’s “World of Circus”, before and after our main headline act.

NEW ART CLUB – “CAMPERVAN OF LOVE”

The piece tells the story of what happened when cupid pricked himself with his own arrow by accident and fell in love with the most beautiful woman in the world. It explores the worlds of love and beauty through dance, physical comedy, theatre and music

GREENTOP – CIRCUS WORKSHOPS

Greentop will be running a series of drop in workshops covering hand held circus skills such as juggling and diabolo. Why not have a go on a unicycle?

CHANGO FUEGO – RING MASTER

The Ringmaster will be on hand to direct all our Festé fans.

Look out for this larger than life Ring Master – but watch out for his sharp wit and big feet.

With some of the best street food and drinks from around the world you’ll be spoilt for choice.

  • Speedough Pizza & Churromania – Festé friend Symeon will be serving his delicious stone baked pizzas, made to order. He will also be creating freshly made churros with a rich dipping chocolate sauce.
  • Falcon Food & Spirits – The ladies from Falcon will return again this year, but this time in Bella, their specially converted vintage caravan where they’ll serve sparkling wine, artisan spirits and craft ciders & beers.
  • The Bus Bar Co. – Matt will once again be bringing his beautiful red double decker bus to keep you refreshed with a variety of delicious alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.
  • Coffee On The Hoof – Welcoming Sarah to her second Festé, where she’ll be serving beautiful barista made, ethically traded espresso coffee along with gorgeous cakes, homemade using fresh natural ingredients from local suppliers.
  • Somtam Street Food – We also welcome the lovely Thanya and her team to Festé for the first time, you definitely won’t want to miss her delicious, authentic Thai street food.
  • 63 Islands – Emma-Louise is passionate about her food and aims to cook good quality street food, letting people know there is more to Caribbean cooking than jerk chicken. 63 Islands looks to celebrate the diversity of Caribbean food and broaden perceptions on what it’s really all about. Welcome to Festé Emma-Louise!
  • The Split Screen Coffee Co. – Jen’s gorgeous seasonal homemade cakes and goodies, along with delicious fresh coffee are more than enough to draw the crowds, but served out of the very beautiful Split Screen VW Campervan, May, we know their first time at Festé will be a memorable one.
  • Deckards – The boys from Deckards will be bringing a unique offering to feed our Festé fans. Nico and Declan are inspired by pop culture, the name comes from the film Blade Runner, and they’ll be serving up the most amazing burgers and baos you’ve ever tasted….these are not your ordinary burgers!
  • The Hop & Hoof – Emma and her team will be joining the Festé Food Village in their gorgeous converted horse box to serve up draught lager, wines and spirits.

Expect the unexpected, savour the strange and revel in the ridiculous. Amusement for the whole family to enjoy – come along and see the streets come to life from noon with entertainment for everyone including live music, circus performances, dance and acrobatics.

HEADLINE – “GARBA”

The Garba is an impressive large scale dance performed as part of the Navratri Festival and originates from the state of Gujarat in India. More than 150 people will be wearing traditional clothes and dancing to traditional Garba music. Derby Market Place will be dressed and lit with lanterns hanging from a specially designed canopy. This impressive performance will leave you with a lasting impression, you can even join in the steps!

CIE ARTONIK – “COLOUR OF TIME”

In a rainbow eruption of powder and dance, “The Colour of Time” brings a stunning reinvention of the traditional Holi festival celebrated in India. Each year, people throw gulal powder in the air showing great joy and mirth, celebrating unity, acceptance of diversity through these colourful embraces, as these Free Hugs offered to strangers. While its origins draw from Indian culture, this reinterpretation is resolutely contemporary and very far from Bollywood. In a massive dance-theatre parade, dancers and musicians move in a choreographed parade towards a huge finale. Joining in, the audience are invited into a riotous explosion of colour and joy, painting the sky with Gulal (coloured corn flour).

JOLI VYANN – “LANCE MOI EN L’AIR”

Thrilling acrobatic skills meet athletic and graceful dance. Blurring the boundaries of dance, theatre and circus, Joli Vyann take you on an imaginative journey, telling stories that excite, enchant and electrify.

Commissioned by Without Walls, Bournemouth Arts by the Sea and Dance Village, presented as Joli Vyann and L’Eolienne.

KULJIT BHAMRA – CHUTNEY

Kuljit Bhamra’s ‘Chutney in the Street’ is an enchanting story told through a unique blend of songs, dance and audience participation all cooked up in a spicy mix of soca guitars and percussion. “Dance to the Chutney music otherwise the Princess won’t fall in love!”

NEW ART CLUB – “CAMPERVAN OF LOVE”

Through a series of songs, dances and hilarious set pieces the performers will explore the physical possibilities of the specially-adapted VW Campervan. They swing, climb and fall whilst engaging the audience in a story that challenges our notion of love.

COREY BAKER DANCE – “PHONEBOX”

Bringing to life this nostalgic British icon with thrilling dance and a wacky digital sound-score. You’ll be captivated as you watch impressive acrobatic and physical moves in, on and around a vintage red telephone box. This show promises to entertain and exhilarate in equal measure.

CIRCUS KATOEN – “EX AEQUÓ”

A wonderful performance from two young circus artists who surprise and move you with their impressive acrobatics. In a playful and physical way they explore the area where they are going to live together for the first time and won’t rest until everything has found its place.

GLASSHOUSE – “US”

A surreal and comic dance theatre performance. ‘Us’ is a re-telling of the classic ‘boy-meets-girl’. This comic dance performance reveals the trials and tribulations of young love. Will they make it work? The audience help them decide; should they stick it out or go their separate ways?

HIGHLY SPRUNG – “ROOTS”

Set on a seven-metre-high tree-like structure, “Roots” is a highly energetic and interactive performance. Watch the performers move effortlessly in and around the tree structure using bungee aerial movement and dance. Creating an intriguing, entertaining and visually stunning experience for all the family.

MAISON FOO – “TESTING”

Join Maison Foo for an unfinished and unpolished test drive performance of early ideas for their latest show in the making Parkour Parents. A great chance for you to see work still in progress and help shape a future piece of street theatre.

HUMAN HOOD – “NOMADIS”

Two nomads meet with instant recognition. Falling into the force of a vortex that brings them here, shaping the Now. Merging bodies in curves and falling into the pulse of the encounter. An animalistic crossing where instinct is the only thing left.

SMOKING APPLES – “ARBOR” – FESTÉ COMMISSION

Part Man. Part Tree. 18 feet tall. Meet Arbor. Created by award-winning puppetry and theatre company Smoking Apples, Arbor will stride around the streets, vanishing between trees and emerging with his cart full of tree saplings. Encouraging the people of Derby to plant and nurture their own trees, Arbor will give out saplings to take home, leaving a legacy that will last throughout the years.

MATT MARKS – “WHEEZE”

Wheeze is an organ like you’ve never seen before. It can be played, it may play itself and it will invite anyone to play it/with it. Playing it will, at times, require physical effort – lungs will be the organs that provide the breath that provides the vitality for the muscles to activate the breath of the organ. For Wheeze is also a vital organ.

LEICESTER MELA – “RANGOLI”

A Rangoli pattern is a form of traditional Indian art that symbolises joy and happiness. It is full of symmetrical, colourful and vibrant designs created at the entrance and courtyard floors of people’s homes to celebrate Diwali.

Derby’s Night Market returns to Festé offering a wide variety of stalls selling street food and drink, gift inspiration, crafts and vintage items.

BIG SCRIBBLE AND CRAFTS

Colourful creative fun for all the family this Festé! Get drawing and making with QUAD staff and artists. Let your creativity run free in the Big Scribble space on the Café Terrace and craft area in the Participation Space. Not forgetting Lego Saturday in the Resource Area.
