As we all know, Derbyshire has more than it's fair share of amazing historical properties of which a number are owned and run by either the National Trust or English Heritage. Both do an amazing job of keeping these important assets in pristine condition and open to the public.
Whilst I love what the National Trust do this is a quick blog about English Heritage ... mainly because of all the fantastic events they have on for kids and families throughout the year.
Bolsover Castle is my fave; the castle itself is stunning and the landscape is picturesque. But my main reason for picking out Bolsover is the sheer number of events they have on all year round.
At the moment they have Cavalier Horsemanship (click on the link to learn more), events at Halloween, events at Christmas, events next year ... the list goes on.
Whilst we appreciate trips to these places can add up (and if you went to every event you'd spend a fortune), English Heritage have a number of low cost membership options which get's you access to not just Bolsover Castle but every property they look after throughout the UK ... what's more you only pay for adults ... what's more is the more adults on the membership the cheaper it is per person!!! Bargain.
Here's a little of what they say on the web:
The historic places in our care span six millennia and include palaces, houses, hill figures, castles, abbeys, industrial sites, Roman forts and even deserted medieval villages. Caring for these places and their collections for the benefit of this and future generations is a cornerstone of everything we do. The generous support of many donors enables us to do this. We have now embarked on the largest conservation programme in our history. Highly skilled conservation work will be carried out on an unprecedented scale; and we will allow the public to witness this as it progresses.
Let's make the most of what we have on our doorstep whilst having loads of fun with the family!
