Heading over to Derby Arena for the Christmas panto has become as much of a yearly tradition as putting the Christmas tree up in the DDO household. The past 2 years we’ve enjoyed Aladdin and Cinderella; this year was the turn of Beauty and the Beast and it’s fair to say that our cheeks are still hurting from laughing so hard and for so long!
After finding a space in the ample car park we were swiftly handed our tickets and went in search of a drink to pass the time before the main event. A fully stocked bar awaits thirsty families (good news is cards are accepted) and after getting our drinks we were shown to our seats by a very friendly attendant.
While waiting we had a flick through the programme and were amazed to see all the big names performing in this year’s productions. Stars of the stage and screen include Ben Faulks as Idle Jacques, who most people will know as loveable Mr Bloom from CBeebies plus actress Gwen Taylor as The Enchantress, a Derby legend! What was fascinating was a show centred around our beloved city and it didn’t disappoint.
From the opening monologue to the end songs, the show was full of Derby based humour including a dig at our waterless water fountain, Chaddesden, Duffield and DDO’s very own Spondon! We won’t spoil the gags but be prepared to laugh out loud time after time!!
The stage production was exceptional with each scene being staged to make the story even more believable. Along with the main actors there was a troop of dancers of all ages who complimented the staging very well.
For DDO Dad sometimes panto’s can have too much singing (DDO Mum disagrees!) but this time the writers got the balance just right with more time for story line and laughter but when the singing came it was flawless; Desper’creepo was a personal highlight of ours.
Lola (10) absolutely loved the show! She said "It was brilliant and really, really funny! My favourite character was Betty Brioche because she was hilarious! I don't have a favourite part because it was all just so good. I'd love to go and watch it again and I think that children my age and younger would definitely enjoy watching it."
You may know the story of Beauty and the Beast, but not like this! If you want to see a show with the family that you can laugh, sing, clap and dance along to then this is the panto for you!
We would absolutely recommend the show to other families; we're sure no one will leave feeling anything other than Christmassy and happy!
Thanks again to Derby Arena, Derby LIVE, Little Wolf Entertainment, the whole cast and everyone connected to Beauty and the Beast for such a fabulous, family night out.
