Festive Derby 2024: A Christmas Wonderland in the Heart of the City
November 30th marked the spectacular start of Festive Derby 2024, and we were thrilled to attend the official launch, immersing ourselves in the city's enchanting festive atmosphere.
An Evening Full of Festive Cheer
The celebrations kicked off with lively performances from local musicians and family-friendly entertainment, setting the perfect stage for the much-anticipated Christmas light switch-on. Mina Anwar, star of Happy Valley and The Thin Blue Line and this year’s fairy godmother in Derby's pantomime at Derby Arena, had the honour of leading the countdown. She was joined by award-winning dame Morgan Brind (one of the Ugly Sisters), Nicola Martinus-Smith (Dandini) along with the Leader of Derby City Council, Councillor Nadine Peatfield, the Mayor of Derby Councillor Ged Potter – and Santa! As they flipped the switch, the city sparkled to life, marking the beginning of Derby’s magical Christmas season.

A Dazzling Light Trail
Visitors were treated to a beautiful light trail showcasing mesmerising installations from The Spot to Cathedral Square, passing through the Market Place. Highlights included shimmering, wrapped rings at The Spot, the nation’s largest illuminated Santa, and a stunning star at the Cathedral, ideal for capturing those festive selfies. Each display added a touch of wonder to Derby’s cityscape. The city streets were brought alive with a fantastic lantern parade and performances led by Surtal Arts.
Fun on Ice & Festive Refreshments
The Market Place transformed into a winter wonderland with its Nordic Bar and Cathedral Quarter Ice Rink. Wrapped in twinkling fairy lights and framed by giant Christmas presents, the Market Place felt more magical than ever. We laced up our skates and joined the fun on the ice—perfect for beginners and seasoned skaters alike. With upbeat music and friendly staff, the atmosphere was electric, and smiles were everywhere.
After our skating session, we headed to the Nordic Bar for a cosy drink. Their menu featured a variety of hot beverages, ales, spirits, festive cocktails, and of course, the quintessential mulled wine. Under the warm glow of fairy lights, we enjoyed live music from Cassette Roulette, turning the bar into a lively Christmas party spot. Best of all, entry is free, with entertainment running throughout the season.
