The Summer Reading Challenge

The Summer Reading Challenge aims to help children of all reading abilities maintain their reading skills over the long summer break from school. This is because evidence shows that children's reading skills can decline if they don’t have regular access to books and encouragement to read for pleasure which can be a real problem for schools to correct.

All libraries in Derby, including those which are community managed, will be running the Summer Reading Challenge throughout the summer holidays in 2022.

From DIY TV programmes to current DIY trends on social media, this unique, quirky exhibition will explore the intriguing past, present and future of DIY. The exhibition, in partnership with the BBC, will not only explore how DIY has been represented in the media, but will also showcase a vast amount of objects associated with DIY, as well as exploring how DIY is changing as we learn more about the importance of sustainability and healthy living spaces and materials.

Forest for the Future 🌳

The Market Place has been transformed into a woodland wonderland bringing a new, vibrant space for al-fresco dining and outdoor events

It will be just one of four Urban Forests in the UK this summer and the only one in the East Midlands.

125 trees and around 300 shrubs have been installed, covering most of the Market Place. Within the forest, a clearing will be created and picnic benches provided for city centre visitors to use for al-fresco dining. There will also be space for a stage so that the clearing can be used as a performance area.  Find out more here
