Beyond the Blue are a Derby-based songwriting duo made up of vocalist Nina Blaszczyk and Phil Baggaley on guitar. Nina brings a fresh, rich, emotive voice to the duo, while Phil, a seasoned musician, crafts their songs’ melodic backbone.
Their latest project Island Spirit, based on a story by Tim Harvey, is a captivating musical where a young Polish woman returns to Scotland to trace her roots. She takes a job at a whisky distillery on a remote Scottish island, discovering the story of her mother, and the father she never knew.
This Edinburgh Fringe preview performance offers original songs from the musical, in-between which the tale unfolds as she learns about her family’s past and her own identity. The show features soulful melodies with Scottish musical influences, weaving together powerful storytelling and emotive songs.

Their previous project, a show titled Beyond the Blue, featured original songs inspired by the poetry of best-selling author Donna Ashworth. Their captivating blend of music and spoken word resonated with audiences, selling out its entire run at the 2024 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Nina and Phil’s creative partnership began with Broken Instruments, a theatre production they presented together with actor Bill Varnam at the EdFringe in 2023 and various other venues, including a sold-out run at Derby’s DEDA Theatre. With two singles, Stars and Wild Places, available on streaming platforms, Beyond the Blue continue to enchant listeners with their soul-stirring music and poetic storytelling.
